Equivalence
2026
Equivalence is a conceptual artwork taking the form of a book.
Contemporary digital images are often perceived as immaterial, instantaneous, and lightweight. Yet they physically exist as encoded data, stored and transmitted through computational infrastructures and remote servers.
Equivalence seeks to make this computational mode of existence tangible. The book consists exclusively of the complete transcription of the source code of a photograph of a cloud, the image reproduced on the cover being the very file whose contents make up the entire volume.
Captured in its most ordinary form of circulation — a photograph taken with a smartphone — the image is here revealed through the textual form that makes its digital existence possible. The book contains nearly five million characters spread across more than nine hundred pages, its thickness and weight being directly determined by the size of the original file.
Dimensions: 17 x 24 cm
